Its story
Ortahisar Castle is a giant rock mass, called Sivrikaya by the locals, rising right in the middle of the town. The inside of the rock is carved with interconnected rooms and halls, and it is thought to have been used as a refuge against attacks in the Byzantine period. The stone houses rising in tiers at the foot of the castle offer characteristic examples of Cappadocian civil architecture. Ortahisar is also known for storing citrus fruit brought from the Mediterranean, as well as local potatoes and apples, in its rock-carved storehouses.
