Nevşehir Castle
Merkez, Nevşehir
A castle on the city's highest hill, thought to have been built in the Seljuk period to protect the caravan road, now used as a viewing terrace.
Its story
Nevşehir Castle rises on a hill overlooking the city and is thought to have been built in the Seljuk period, in the 12th century, to protect the caravan road passing through the region. Repaired in the Ottoman period, the castle has crenellated walls and two gates. A large underground settlement is known to lie beneath the hill. The area around the castle is now a viewpoint popular with city residents; from here you can see Nevşehir's old neighborhoods, the Kurşunlu Mosque and, in the distance, Mount Erciyes.
