Its story
Derinkuyu Underground City lies beneath the Derinkuyu district, about 30 km from Nevşehir on the Nevşehir–Niğde road. Discovered in 1963 and opened to visitors in 1967, the city now has eight levels cleared; when all levels are opened, the depth is expected to reach 85 meters. The rock-carved city contains stables, wineries, food stores, water wells, ventilation shafts, a church and a vaulted hall interpreted as a missionary school. In times of danger, each level could be closed off separately with large stone wheels. Among the Greek Orthodox population, the settlement's name was Malakopi.
