Gülek Castle
Tarsus, Mersin
A medieval castle on a high rock controlling the historic pass across the Taurus.
Safety warning
Its story
The castle is positioned right above the pass known as the Cilician Gates and was used in the Byzantine, Armenian and Crusader periods. As the pass was one of the most important roads linking inner Anatolia to Çukurova, the castle was a strategic lookout point. Climbing to its walls is hard work, but the view takes in the Taurus valleys completely.
