Tarsus, Mersin
One of the largest building remains in Anatolia, consisting of the concrete core of a giant Roman-period temple.
Its story
The structure, long thought to be the tomb of an Assyrian king, was found through research to be the foundation of a large temple from the Roman imperial period. Its marble facing was removed over time, leaving huge masses of wall fused with mortar. Its dimensions show the wealth and importance of Tarsus in the Roman period.
