Akkale Archaeological Site
Erdemli, Mersin
An archaeological site near the shore known for a large two-story Byzantine-period building complex and its giant cisterns.
Its story
Akkale is interpreted as a palace or mansion complex dated to the Late Roman–Early Byzantine period. The most striking elements of the building are its intact cisterns and stone staircases. As it is close to the shore, it is thought that there was a settlement around it living from sea-borne trade and agriculture.
