Its story
The building is thought to have been commissioned at the beginning of the 13th century by the Artuqid Sultan Melik Nasreddin Artuk Arslan. Presenting the scheme of a madrasa with an arcaded courtyard and iwans, the building has preserved little of its original form because of repairs and additions over the centuries; the most altered part is the mosque section with two transverse naves. The present minaret, which replaced the collapsed one, is said to have been raised in 1916-1917 by the Armenian architect Sarkis Lole in an eclectic style without scaffolding, and stands out in the old city's skyline. The mosque, together with the old mansions with stone decoration opposite it, is one of the stops on a walk along 1. Cadde.
