Its story
At this crossing of the Euphrates between Malatya and Elazığ, the first bridge was built by a Swedish firm and opened in 1932; this structure, also known as the İsmet Paşa Bridge, was submerged when the waters of the Karakaya Dam rose. The bridge built between 1983 and 1986 using the balanced cantilever method was included in the Chamber of Civil Engineers' '50 Works in 50 Years' list. At the same point, a new 660-meter bridge opened on 2 January 2021 together with twin-tube tunnels and connecting roads. The bridge is also the subject of the folk song 'Fırat Ağıtı' (Euphrates Lament) from the Elazığ area; its surroundings are a well-known spot for watching the canyon scenery of the Karakaya Dam Lake.
