Sultan Hanı (Tuzhisar)
Bünyan, Kayseri
Türkiye's second-largest medieval caravanserai, commissioned in 1232–1237 by Alaeddin Keykubad I on the Kayseri–Sivas road.
Its story
The Tuzhisar Sultan Hanı is on the Sivas road about 47 km northeast of Kayseri and was commissioned between 1232 and 1237 by the Anatolian Seljuk Sultan Alaeddin Keykubad I. With an area of about 3,900 m², it is Türkiye's largest medieval caravanserai after the Sultanhanı in Aksaray. Through the monumental muqarnas portal you enter an arcaded courtyard with a kiosk masjid rising on four piers in the middle; the second portal opposite opens onto the domed winter hall. The lion-headed gargoyles and dragon motifs are fine examples of Seljuk stonework.
