Karatay Han
Bünyan, Kayseri
A two-part caravanserai with a masjid and hamam on the Kayseri–Malatya road, commissioned by the Seljuk vizier Celâleddin Karatay.
Its story
The Karatay Han was commissioned by the Anatolian Seljuk statesman Celâleddin Karatay on the Kayseri–Malatya caravan road. The han consists of an open section of spaces arranged around a rectangular courtyard and a smaller covered section at the back. The domed space beside the entrance is the han's masjid, and the section east of it is its hamam. Used for many years on a busy trade road, the han lost its importance when trade routes changed after the geographical discoveries, and it was converted into a zaviye in the 16th century.
