Its story
Pompeiopolis is one of the cities founded in the region by Pompey the Great after his defeat of the Kingdom of Pontus in 64/63 BC. The city is in the Gökırmak (ancient Amnias) valley, right opposite the present-day settlement of Taşköprü, and has been identified since the 19th century with the remains on Zımbıllı Tepe. In the Roman period it became one of the important centers of Paphlagonia, with its territory stretching from the Küre Mountains to Ilgaz. The houses, mosaics and public buildings uncovered in excavations show the city's level of development. During excavation seasons, part of the site may be closed to visitors.
