Its story
The castle is on a rocky hill south of the Araç district center, right beside the Araç Çayı (Araç Stream). It is accepted as having been built in the Eastern Roman (Byzantine) period to protect the valley and the road passing through it against attacks. The walls seen today are the Byzantine structure as repaired in the Ottoman period. In Araç, a very old settlement, it is considered likely that this rock was also used in earlier periods. The walls on the eastern side of the castle collapsed over time and houses were built in their place. The castle, reachable on foot from the district center, offers a short stop for looking down on the stream valley and the town.
