Its story
Construction of the mosque began in 1597 on the orders of Safiye Sultan, but for various reasons it remained unfinished for a long time. It was completed in 1665 with the support of Hatice Turhan Sultan and opened together with its complex. The complex includes a royal pavilion (hünkâr kasrı), a tomb, a sebil (public fountain) and the Mısır Çarşısı (Spice Bazaar), built as a source of revenue. Because of its location at the mouth of the Golden Horn, it is one of the city's most photographed silhouettes from the Galata Bridge and the ferries.
