Bulgarian Church of St. Stephen (Sveti Stefan)
Fatih, İstanbul
A 19th-century Bulgarian Orthodox church on the Golden Horn, built of prefabricated cast-iron parts.
Its story
The church opened in 1898, after the establishment of the Bulgarian Exarchate. Designed with cast-iron parts instead of wood, the building's components were produced in Vienna, brought to İstanbul via the Danube and the Black Sea and assembled here. With its facade bearing Neo-Gothic and Neo-Baroque elements and its ornate interior, it is a unique architectural example. It reopened to visitors in 2018 after a restoration carried out with the support of Türkiye and Bulgaria.
