Its story
The church was built between 1906 and 1912 to serve the Italian community, to a design by Giulio Mongeri, an İstanbul-born Italian architect. The apartment blocks on the courtyard facade facing the street were intended as a source of income for the church. In the early 20th century Pope John XXIII preached here during the years he served in İstanbul, before he was elected pope. The church is still a living place of worship today, with services in different languages.
