Şemsi Paşa Mosque
Üsküdar, İstanbul
A small, elegant mosque and madrasa by Mimar Sinan on the Üsküdar shore, known for its position right at the water's edge.
Its story
It was built by Mimar Sinan in 1580 in the name of Vizier Şemsi Ahmed Paşa. The small mosque on the waterfront forms a whole with madrasa cells arranged in an L shape and the tomb of Şemsi Paşa. The tomb's window opening into the mosque is one of the building's interesting details. Because of a folk tale that birds do not land on the mosque, it is also known as the 'Kuşkonmaz Camii' (the mosque birds don't land on); the madrasa is used today as a library.
