Şehzade Mosque
Fatih, İstanbul
The mosque Mimar Sinan called his 'apprentice work', built for Şehzade Mehmed, Süleyman the Magnificent's son who died young.
Its story
Süleyman the Magnificent commissioned Mimar Sinan to build a large complex in memory of his son Şehzade (Prince) Mehmed, who died in 1543; the mosque was completed in 1548. Its symmetrical plan, in which the central dome is supported by four semi-domes, was Sinan's first attempt at a large-scale imperial mosque. The tomb section includes the tomb of Şehzade Mehmed, notable for its tiles and painted decoration. With its madrasa, public kitchen and guesthouse (tabhane), the complex shapes the Saraçhane area next to the Bozdoğan Aqueduct.
