Sadabad (Çağlayan) Mosque
Kağıthane, İstanbul
A mosque rebuilt in 1863 on the banks of the Kâğıthane Stream, site of the famous Sadabad recreation ground of the Tulip Era.
Its story
The banks of the Kâğıthane Stream were a recreation ground laid out in the 18th century, in the reign of Ahmed III, under the name Sadabad, and the scene of the entertainments and festivities of the Tulip Era. The first mosque in the area was also built in the reign of Ahmed III and repaired in later centuries. The present building was rebuilt in 1863, in the reign of Sultan Abdülaziz, by the palace architect Sarkis Balyan and resembles the Ortaköy Mosque in style. Its minaret has two separate staircases rising to the balcony without the climbers seeing each other.
