Its story
It was built by Mimar Sinan in the 1560s in the name of Rüstem Paşa, grand vizier of Süleyman the Magnificent. The mosque was set on a high arched substructure so that income would come from the shops below; as a result it has a quiet courtyard reached by stairs, separate from the noise of the bazaar. The interior is covered with İznik tiles from their finest period, decorated with tulip, carnation and pomegranate-blossom motifs. It reopened for worship after a four-year restoration that began in 2016.
