Its story
The mosque was built in the 16th century by Şah Sultan, daughter of Yavuz Sultan Selim (Selim I), in the name of Merkez Efendi, successor (halife) of Sünbül Efendi. Merkez Efendi is remembered as the first to prepare the mixture made of forty-one kinds of spices and herbs known as 'mesir macunu' (mesir paste). In addition to the mosque, tomb, retreat cell (çilehane), hammam and library, the complex has a well regarded as sacred. The historic cemetery around it stretches among cypresses just outside the land walls.
