Küçükyalı Archaeopark (Bryas Palace)
Maltepe, İstanbul
An archaeological site in Küçükyalı, Maltepe, where 9th-century Byzantine palace and monastery remains are laid out as an open-air park.
Its story
The building remains on the site were long associated with the Bryas Palace built by Byzantine Emperor Theophilos in the 9th century; recent excavations, however, have shown that the remains may belong to a large monastery complex. Among the remains are a large cistern, church foundations and building walls. After excavations carried out in cooperation between the Maltepe Municipality and the İstanbul Archaeological Museums, the site opened to the public as an archaeopark supported by information panels.
