Küçükçekmece Bridge
Küçükçekmece, İstanbul
A 16th-century Ottoman stone bridge carrying the old Rumeli road at the mouth where Lake Küçükçekmece opens to the sea.
Its story
There is known to have been a bridge at this crossing in the Roman period too, repaired before the 1453 conquest because of its strategic importance. Construction of the present bridge began in the reign of Süleyman the Magnificent and was completed in the reign of Selim II; its construction is attributed to Acem Ali. In sources it is referred to as the 'small bridge' in comparison with the bridge at Büyükçekmece. It has partly lost its original appearance because its slope was flattened by alterations made during the First World War.
