Kılıç Ali Paşa Mosque
Beyoğlu, İstanbul
A mosque and complex in Tophane built by Mimar Sinan for Grand Admiral Kılıç Ali Paşa, interpreting Hagia Sophia on a small scale.
Its story
The mosque was built by Mimar Sinan in the 1580s in the name of Kılıç Ali Paşa, admiral of the Ottoman fleet. With its scheme of a central dome and two semi-domes, its plan recalls Hagia Sophia on a smaller scale. The complex also includes a madrasa, a tomb and the Kılıç Ali Paşa Hammam, notable for its hot section. After lengthy restorations the hammam is back in service; the mosque is one of the prominent buildings on Tophane's waterfront skyline.
