Kanuni Sultan Süleyman Bridge
Büyükçekmece, İstanbul
A 636-meter, four-section stone bridge where Lake Büyükçekmece opens to the sea, which Mimar Sinan called his 'masterpiece'.
Its story
As Süleyman the Magnificent set out on the Szigetvár (Zigetvar) campaign, the army had difficulty crossing the mouth of the lake at Büyükçekmece on rafts, so he ordered a bridge to be built here. Built by Mimar Sinan, the bridge was completed in 1567, in the reign of Selim II, after Süleyman's death on the campaign. Made up of four separate sections with 28 arches, the bridge is about 636 meters long. At the head of the bridge stand the remains of the Sokullu Mehmet Paşa Mosque, the Kurşunlu Han and the Kanuni Fountain.
