Sultanahmet Square (Hippodrome)
Fatih, İstanbul
The square on the site of the Hippodrome, the chariot-racing arena of Byzantium; home to the Obelisk, the Serpent Column and the Walled Obelisk.
Its story
The square lies over the Hippodrome, the center of the city's social and political life in the Roman and Byzantine periods. The Obelisk (Dikilitaş), brought from Egypt and erected in 390 under Emperor Theodosius I, the bronze Serpent Column brought from Delphi and the stone Walled Obelisk (Örme Sütun) are what remains of the monuments that adorned the middle of the racetrack. In the Ottoman period, under the name Atmeydanı, it was the scene of ceremonies and festivities. At the northern end of the square is the German Fountain, a 1901 gift from German Emperor Wilhelm II.
