Gül Mosque (Rose Mosque)
Fatih, İstanbul
A high-domed mosque in Cibali near the Golden Horn, converted from a Byzantine-era church.
Its story
Although the building is known to have been built as a church in the Byzantine period, the saint to whom it was dedicated is debated; it is commonly associated with St. Theodosia. According to legend, on the morning of the conquest in 1453 the church was decorated with roses, and the mosque takes its name (gül means rose) from this story. A minaret and a new dome were added when the building was converted into a mosque in the Ottoman period. The mosque stands out with its large mass within the quiet neighborhood fabric of the Golden Horn shore.
