Çinili Mosque (Tiled Mosque)
Üsküdar, İstanbul
A 17th-century mosque in Üsküdar whose interior is covered from top to bottom with İznik tiles.
Its story
The mosque was built in 1640 in the name of Kösem Sultan, wife of Sultan Ahmed I and mother of Murad IV and Sultan İbrahim. The walls of the small single-domed building are covered with the blue- and green-toned İznik tiles from which it takes its name (çini means tile). The complex also includes a primary school (sıbyan mektebi), a madrasa, a hammam and a fountain. It is located in a quiet neighborhood of Üsküdar, close to the Atik Valide Mosque.
