Beyazıt Mosque
Fatih, İstanbul
The oldest surviving imperial mosque in İstanbul; Bayezid II's complex on Beyazıt Square.
Its story
The mosque was built between 1501 and 1506 in the name of Sultan Bayezid II and is the oldest surviving sultan's mosque in the city. Its plan, in which the central dome is extended by two semi-domes, represents a stage inspired by Hagia Sophia that paved the way for Mimar Sinan. It stands out for its arcaded courtyard, colored stone columns and the şadırvan (ablution fountain) in the middle. The complex's madrasa, public kitchen and hammam are partly preserved among the surrounding buildings with different functions.
