Tomb of Abdurrahman Gazi
Sancaktepe, İstanbul
The grave in Samandıra of Abdurrahman Gazi, the Ottoman frontier lord who conquered Aydos Castle in the reign of Orhan Gazi.
Its story
Abdurrahman Gazi was a frontier lord (uç beyi) who served during the founding years of the Ottoman Beylik under Ertuğrul Gazi, Osman Gazi and Orhan Gazi. He led raids on the Byzantine fortresses toward İstanbul, and in 1328 Orhan Gazi tasked him, together with Konur Alp, with the conquest of Aydos Castle. According to legend, the castle was taken by a stratagem based on a letter written by the daughter of the tekfur (Byzantine lord) after a dream she had, and the daughter later married Abdurrahman Gazi. The Gazi died in 1329 and was buried in Samandıra, in the neighborhood that now bears his name. The tomb receives visitors as one of the important symbols of the area's historic identity.
