Its story
The Ulu Mosque, also known as the Atabey Mosque, was built according to its now-lost inscription in 1179-80, in the reign of the Saltukid ruler Melik Nâsırüddin Muhammed. Like early Anatolian ulu mosques, it has a wide, low prayer hall divided by many piers. The dome in front of the mihrab is built with stepped wooden beams in the technique called 'kırlangıç örtü' (lantern roof); the construction date is reported to be written on one of the beams of this covering. Each of its five doors has a different shape. Located right next to the Çifte Minareli Madrasa, the mosque is one of the natural stops on the city's historic walking route and is still open for worship.
