Its story
Taoskari, meaning 'gate of Tao' in Georgian, was one of the settlements of the Tao region that formed part of Georgia in the Middle Ages, and the Ottomans took the village in 1550. The church is one of two churches standing side by side in a garden in the village; the fact that both were built in the same period suggests that there may have been a monastery here. The domed building with an eight-armed plan is built of roughly dressed stones laid in lime mortar. Although its dome has collapsed, its walls reach 3 meters in places. On his research trip in 1907, the Georgian historian Ekvtime Takaishvili recorded this church and the other buildings in the village bearing Georgian inscriptions. On the rock southeast of the village, the remains of Taoskari Castle can be seen.
