Its story
The monastery's main church, dedicated to St. John the Baptist, was built between 963 and 973 under the patronage of Bagrat II and David III, the Bagrationi rulers of the Tao region. One of the important centers of Georgian literature and manuscript production in the Middle Ages, the building is regarded architecturally as one of the largest and most complex structures in the Eastern Christian world. The blind arcades on the exterior facades and the reliefs of an archangel, a Deesis and donors high on the south facade are striking. The church stands today within the village of Çamlıyamaç in Uzundere; as its roof and some load-bearing elements are worn, the need for restoration continues.
