İspir Castle
İspir, Erzurum
A restored medieval castle rising in terraces on a rock on the banks of the Çoruh River, containing the remains of a basilica and a 19th-century mosque.
Its story
The castle, on a rock mass on the banks of the Çoruh River southwest of İspir, the center of the historic Speri region, is also mentioned in Georgian and other foreign sources. The building, which was evidently reworked several times, spreads over different terraces and preserves its high walls in some sections. Inside the castle are the remains of a large basilica estimated to have been built in the 9th–10th centuries; in the upper part is a single-minaret mosque built in the 19th century using the stones of this basilica. The restored castle serves as a viewpoint overlooking the Çoruh valley and İspir.
