Ferhat Water Channel
Merkez, Amasya
A Hellenistic–Roman water channel at the foot of Mount Ferhat, cut into the rock and tunneled through it, and the subject of the legend of Ferhat and Şirin.
Its story
The channel was built in the Late Hellenistic or Early Roman period to carry water to ancient Amasya. Of its total length of about 6 kilometers, a 2-kilometer section can easily be seen from the road. The water was carried in places through channels cut into the rock, in places through tunnels and in places along built walls. In popular tradition, the channel is known as the work of Ferhat, who bored through the mountain to be united with Şirin. At the start of the channel there are a statue and a museum telling the legend.
