Its story
Tieion (Tios) is a Milesian colony founded at the point where the Filyos Çayı (Filyos River) flows into the sea, and is today in the township of Filyos in Çaycuma. According to Strabo, it is the birthplace of Philetairos, founder of the Kingdom of Pergamon. The first traces of settlement, going back to the Phrygian period, were found on the acropolis; the city was refounded after being sacked in 70 BC and became an important religious center in the Byzantine period. Excavations have been ongoing since 2006 at the site, which has remains such as a castle, an open-air theater, aqueducts and the breakwater of the ancient harbor. During excavation seasons some sections may be closed to visitors.
