Karadeniz Ereğli is a city known in antiquity as Herakleia Pontike, one of the important Greek colonies on the Black Sea coast. The Provincial Directorate of Culture and Tourism counts Kdz. Ereğli Castle among the district's must-see places. The castle remains are above the city center, between the Cehennemağzı Caves and the museum. From the preserved sections of the walls and the viewpoints around them, the harbor and the city can be seen.
