Tomb of Çerkez İsa Bey and Kümbetli Mosque
Çayıralan, Yozgat
A cut-stone kümbet with an iwan and pointed cap dated 1587-88 in central Çayıralan, and the 16th-century mosque beside it.
Its story
The site of Çayıralan was, in the second half of the 16th century, the farm of Çerkez (İsa) Bey, a timar holder in Bozok and sanjak bey of Kırşehir; the district's history largely begins with his name. According to its inscription, the tomb was built in 1587-88 (996 AH). In front of the kümbet, which has an octagonal body on a square base, a dome inside and a pointed cap outside, there is an open iwan resembling that of the Şah Sultan Hatun Tomb. In the building, made entirely of fine cut stone, stones of different colors and the carved stone decoration around the door stand out. The Kümbetli (Lower) Mosque in the same courtyard is thought, based on the date in an Ottoman Turkish inscription, to have been built in 1573-74 and repaired in 1739-40.
