Zeve Martyrs' Memorial (Zeve Şehitliği)
Tuşba, Van
A martyrs' memorial and monument in Tuşba, built in memory of the Muslim villagers who lost their lives in the village of Zeve in 1915, during the First World War.
Its story
Zeve was a village on the shore of Lake Van, near what is today the Van Yüzüncü Yıl University campus. During the days of conflict in Van in the First World War, in the spring of 1915, the village was taken by Armenian armed groups and most of the Muslim people living in the village lost their lives; official accounts give the number of losses as around 2,500. Some of those who were able to flee the village settled in nearby Bardakçı. The memorial built in remembrance of these events has a monument tower about 15 meters high. The memorial hosts official commemoration ceremonies on dates such as 18 March and 2 April, the day of Van's liberation; at other times of the year it is a quiet place of remembrance.
