An Urartian archaeological site on a ridge overlooking the Gürpınar Plain, founded by the Urartian King Sarduri II, with fine stonework, temples and a palace.

Its story

The castle, on the ridge just south of the Van–Hakkari road about 25 km southeast of Van, was founded by the Urartian King Sarduri II (764-734 BC) and took the name Sardurihinili, meaning 'the city of Sarduri'. It consists of lower and upper castles; in the Upper Castle, 30 meters higher, there is a temple of Haldi and a second temple dedicated to the god Irmushini; setting aside cult areas for two different gods is not seen in other Urartian castles. The Lower Castle contains a palace, storerooms, cellars, cisterns and rock-cut water structures. The cut-stone walls, laid without mortar but fitted perfectly, reach 5–6 meters in height in places. The site was excavated between 1961 and 1986 under the direction of Prof. Dr. Afif Erzen.
