Zağnos Bridge
Ortahisar, Trabzon
A single-span historic stone bridge connecting Ortahisar to the Atapark side, repaired by Zağanos Paşa in the 15th century.
Its story
The bridge over the Kuzgun Dere valley connects the Zindan and İmaret gates of the castle. Although its first construction date is not known for certain, it is claimed to have been built in the Roman period; traces of Byzantine and Ottoman workmanship can be seen in the structure. It takes its name from Zağanos Paşa, who had it repaired in the 15th century. Thought to have once been a wooden drawbridge, the structure was renewed and widened in 1888; today it serves traffic as a single-span cut-stone bridge with a round arch. It is best seen together with the walls from the Zağnos Valley Park below it.
