Its story
The building is the monastery church dedicated to Eugenios, believed to have been killed in Trabzon in the Roman period and regarded as the city's patron saint. Although its exact construction date is unknown, the monastery is thought to have existed since at least the 9th century; the building bears an inscription dated 1291. Mehmed II, who took Trabzon in 1461, visited the church, had it converted into a mosque and gave it the name Yeni Cuma; a minaret was added to the north entrance. The three-naved, three-apsed building has reliefs of an eagle and doves on its central apse with a pentagonal exterior, and relief crosses and floral decoration on its walls. It is in the Yenicuma neighborhood, east of the castle walls.
