Its story
Vazelon Monastery is built on a steep rock at an altitude of about 1200 meters within the boundaries of the village of Kiremitli in Maçka and is dedicated to John the Baptist. Although its construction date is not known for certain, the 3rd–4th centuries are suggested; it is reported that the first monastery was founded in front of a cave and a holy spring (ayazma) and was repaired in 565 by order of Justinian. The church and monks' cells standing today largely belong to a later period. The monastery was for a long time one of the centers of Orthodox life in the Maçka area and was abandoned after the population exchange of 1923. On its north outer wall, traces of frescoes depicting Heaven, Hell and the Last Judgment can be seen.
