Its story
The mosque is the Panagia Chrysokephalos (Golden-Headed Virgin) building, the church of a monastery complex in the Empire of Trebizond period; the emperors' coronation ceremonies were held here. After Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror took the city in 1461, he converted the building into a mosque, and it was regarded as the symbol of the conquest. A mihrab, a minbar and a minaret were later added to the three-naved building. Its carved walnut minbar, mihrab of marble and red stone, and two-colored stone minaret of about 35 meters stand out. The building was repaired between 2015 and 2017 by the Regional Directorate of Foundations. It can be visited together with the castle walls.
