Kalepark (Güzelhisar Castle)
Ortahisar, Trabzon
A park laid out on a rocky hill overlooking the harbor, on the site of Leonkastron, the medieval castle built by Genoese merchants.
Its story
The castle, originally called Leonkastron and later Güzelhisar, was built in the Middle Ages by Genoese and Venetian merchants on a rocky hill overlooking the city's summer harbor to the west and winter harbor to the east. The Genoese used it as a base to secure their trade and at times had disputes with the rulers of Trebizond. In the 1740s the Ottoman governor Ahmet Paşa had a palace built on the same site; the palace was ruined in a fire in 1790. The site, bombarded by the Russian navy in World War I, has today been laid out as Kalepark and is a resting place overlooking the harbor and the sea.
