Perinthos (Herakleia) Ancient City
Marmaraereğlisi, Tekirdağ
Perinthos-Herakleia, an ancient port city founded by colonists from Samos that served as capital of the Roman province of Thrace.
Its story
Perinthos is believed to have been founded around 600 BC by colonists from Samos. It was one of the three great port cities of the Marmara in antiquity and became the capital of the province of Thrace in the Roman period. At the end of the 3rd century AD the city took the name Herakleia, from which today's name Marmaraereğlisi also derives. Most of the remains lie beneath the modern town; architectural fragments and traces of walls uncovered by excavations in the district center can be seen.
