Its story
According to some researchers, the building was converted from a church into a mosque in the 7th century, when Islam came to the region. Its eight inscriptions show that it was repaired in the Abbasid period, rebuilt by the Zengid atabeg in 1160, and renovated again in 1203 and 1284; the minaret is dated 1155. The cut-stone mosque, with a transversely rectangular plan and a dome in front of the mihrab, is entered through seven doors from the courtyard surrounded by madrasa rooms. The bronze knockers on the monumental central door, depicting a lion's head between two dragons, are famous: one is in the Istanbul Museum of Turkish and Islamic Arts, and the other was smuggled abroad in 1969. The only decoration of the brick minaret, which has no balcony and a conical cap, is the tile panels on its base. After a long restoration, the mosque has reopened to visitors.
