Its story
İdil is one of the historic Syriac settlements of the Tur Abdin region; its Syriac name is Azakh, and it is also mentioned in sources as Beth Zabday. The Church of the Virgin Mary in the district center is the active church of the Syriac Orthodox community and is presented in local tradition as one of the oldest churches in the world. The town's history has also witnessed painful events, such as the deaths of the Archbishop of Azakh and members of the community in the attack by Bedirhan Bey, Emir of Bohtan, in 1847. İdil and surrounding villages such as Haberli (Bsorino) have many churches and monasteries; the Church of the Virgin Mary is the easiest way to see this heritage in the district center.
