Its story
Cizre Castle, on the bank of the Tigris, consists of two parts: an inner and an outer castle. A large part of its walls has not survived, and some of the outer facing stones of the standing southern part have been removed over time; the bastion, popularly also called Birca Belek, is one of the city's symbols. The castle was used for military purposes until 2010; after the restoration in 2012, excavation and repair work continued, and the restoration by the General Directorate of Foundations is also ongoing. The Hamidiye Barracks right beside the castle, built between 1890 and 1909 in the reign of Abdülhamid II, are being converted into the Cizre Museum, where about 1,800 works are to be displayed. With its location close to the Ulu Mosque and the Kızıl Madrasa, it is part of a tour of the old town.
