Its story
Although the origin of Sinop Fortress is not known for certain, ancient sources and research show that the walls go back as far as the 7th century BC. In the time of King Mithridates of Pontus the city was expanded with walls, and later the Romans, Byzantines, Anatolian Seljuks, İsfendiyaroğulları and Ottomans repaired and strengthened the fortress. The walls bear repair inscriptions dated 1215, 1218, 1434 and 1451. The walls, totaling about two kilometers, are still impressive, reaching 25 meters in height in some sections. The fortress was added to the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List in 2013; the bastions on the harbor side and the area around Kumkapı are the most enjoyable sections for a walk.
