Its story
Soğmatar, in the Yağmurlu neighborhood, was a cult center used in the Roman period (2nd century AD), at the time of the Kingdom of the Abgars, by the people of Harran for the Moon god Sin and the planetary gods. On the slopes of the rocky 'Sacred Hill', about 50 meters high, in the center there are reliefs of gods and Syriac inscriptions dated to the 2nd–3rd centuries AD; the inscriptions refer to the 'lord of the gods' and to the 'governors of Arab'. Around it are the Pognon Cave with reliefs dedicated to the Moon god, six monumental tombs of square and round plan, a citadel and rock-cut tombs. Local tradition also remembers it as a place where the Prophet Moses lived for a time. It is within the boundaries of the Tek Tek Mountains National Park.
